Our fifteenth time at the Hebden Village (Ibbotson) Institute, BS23 5DE, near Grassington. 28 of us enjoyed the hospitality, with plenty of cakes - who travelled furthest this year? David Gayler from East London was the winner again!
Take some photos!
There are plenty of milestones left along the A1 north of Berwick, but we are short of photos for the Society's Repository. The road is very busy but could you go out one quiet Sunday morning and take some snaps?
You can find details of their locations on Google Earth, from the link on the main website's homepage, www.MilestoneSociety.co.uk
Happy hunting !!
Old Toll House at Lamberton
In September 2011, my school-friend Linda and I set off to spend a week in Berwick in her motor-home, accompanied by her boisterous trainee guide dog. While route-planning with my 1999 road atlas, I spotted an "Old Toll House" at Lamberton, checked it out on the web and decided it was definitely worth a visit.
Apparently Lamberton was at least as popular as Gretna Green for speedy marriages on the Scottish border. I've always been interested in how toll-keepers supplemented their earnings – the ones in Huddersfield included a milliner and a cobbler – but the Lamberton ones must have rented out their premises to a variety of people who 'solemnised' such liaisons.
